LOCATION

Historiallinen Kerkonkosken Wanha Mylly on kylän tunnetuimpia maamerkkejä. Tule aistimaan myllyn kaunis tunnelma ja veden läheisyys paikan päälle!

Wanha Mylly on rakennettu 1830-luvulla.

Kerkonkoski Sauna Marathon 2024

Kerkonkoski Sauna Marathon 2024

Kerkonkoski Saunamaraton

Gentle saunas and joyful encounters

The Kerkonkoski Saunamaraton was organized for the second time on June 15, 2024. The idea of the event is to tour the saunas around the village center, which the people of Kerkonkoski have opened for the delight of event guests. The Kerkonkoski Saunamaraton is not a speed race, but the purpose is to enjoy the steam baths of as many saunas as possible, good company, and the beautiful scenery of the village.

This year, there were 10 different saunas and over 70 event guests. The event was so popular that registration had to be closed at the beginning of the event week. After this, the organizers' phones were ringing, but in order to ensure a pleasant experience, they didn't dare to take on any more sauna guests.

The event started at the Kesäravintola Kerkonkosken Keitaa with information and team division. This time, Halttunen Pekka's ferry transported marathon runners to three different saunas on the Niinivesi side. All saunas were easily accessible on foot. This year's special features included unique caravan and boat saunas.

Visitors came from nearby villages, Kuopio and even Vantaa. We received great feedback from visitors and the overall satisfaction with the event was 5/5.

A good-natured event! It's wonderful that there are people who let strangers into their saunas 🙂 and who have the courage to help make an event like this happen!

It was such a relaxed day and a peaceful feeling. Kerkonkoski is a lovely little village, countryside, water bodies and everything is close by. I managed to try out 8/10 saunas and each sauna left a positive impression on me. Saunamarathon is a great community event, thanks to the sauna users and organizers <3

Incredible work and dedication. Thank youThank youThank you!!!!!

A big thank you to the sauna hosts. We heard great stories from them.

Warm thanks to the event's sauna hosts and hostesses, Grandpa Pekka, the volunteers, and the event guests!

The next Sauna Marathon has been tentatively scheduled to be held on June 14, 2025.

Traveling to Kerkonkoski project

Traveling to Kerkonkoski - a new impetus for tourism with the project

Iltapilkki 24

The work of the Kerkolla kylään project carried out in 2022-23 bore fruit, and Kerkonkoski has become visible throughout the entire North Savo region through various events. During the project, intensive communication work was carried out using social media, and websites and social media channels were created to serve villagers and tourists. There has also been a lot of press coverage in the area's newspapers.

The Kerkolla Village project aimed to increase community spirit and has attracted new volunteers and entrepreneurs to the village association. Events and active visibility have played a major role in engaging in the activities. During the project, events that aroused a lot of interest were created, such as Kerkonkosken Venetsialaiste, Kerkon Iltapilkki and Saunamaraton. The preservation of the village school has been one of the most important goals of the previous project. Development work and marketing were carried out to develop the school.

Various tourism-related measures, such as mapping out bicycle tourism opportunities, utilizing the Old Mill, for example, in events, and creating and developing events, were already carried out during the Kerkko Village project, but this has only just scratched the surface.

Smart villages project brings a new kind of vitality to the village

The last couple of years have shown that there is still work to be done in the field of tourism in Kerkonkoski, and Kerkonkosken Ketterä ry decided to apply for a new project. The Traveling to Kerkonkoski project received the green light from the board of the Development Association Mansikka ry in autumn 2023, and this spring the project was also approved by the North Savo ELY Centre. The project is a Smart Villages project and was granted €60,000 in funding for two years. It will be implemented in cooperation with the Kiesimä Village Association. Johanna Koponen will continue as a project worker.

Kerkonkoski's strength is, according to the village's slogan, its location "in the middle of nowhere". Silence, peace, and genuinely clean nature and water attract people to live, have cottages, and travel to the area. The project aims to tie Kerkonkoski's tourism potential together into a compact village tourism entity and make it visible to reach tourists.

The village's dirt road network will be utilized for gravel cycling routes and existing trails will be harnessed for hiking. The project naturally also includes working on marketing material. Unique events and various outdoor routes create well-being for the residents of Kerkonkoski and the surrounding area. We also want tourists to stop, stay overnight and use the services in the village.

The common thread of the project's activities is the village's artistic and cultural background. Kerkonkoski is home to many artists and innovative people, and we want to utilize their creations and activities so that it is a more visible part of the village. During the project, we will find out how to make art and the village's culture visible, for example at the Old Mill, in the village's signposts and on outdoor routes. We want the outdoor route to stand out from the crowd with landscaping and/or soundscape, and we will involve the village's artists in its design.

International cooperation brings new ideas and vitality to the village community

In Finland, the concept of village tourism is not yet well known, and for this reason, ideas, lessons and experiences are sought abroad. This requires a study trip to European village tourism destinations. Visits and other contacts will increase international cooperation for Kerkonkoski. We are currently looking for an active twin village in Europe with which to conduct cultural exchanges. We want to get to know village activities abroad and draw ideas for our own activities. In return, we want to invite a twin village to visit Kerkonkoski. This way, we bring internationality closer to the villagers and thus increase the excitement in the village.

Marketing material will also be created to serve foreign tourists and residents. The project will map the utilization of digital services in various tourism services.

It's better for two little ones to struggle together.

Traveling to Kerkonkoski – the project is being carried out in collaboration with the Kiesimä Village Association, a smaller neighboring village of Kerkonkoski. Cooperation with this association has already been initiated during the Kerkolli Village project. A gravel cycling route has been planned between Kiesimä and Kerkonkoski, and the Kiesimä Village Association’s rental cabins are marketed on the Kerkonkoski website. It has been good to continue the collaboration to develop the route network and tourism services. Kiesimä also has interesting places to visit that have not been used before: for example, the Temple of the Giants and the Kiesimä Canal are unknown even to many people living nearby.

With the project, we want to activate the people of two closely operating village associations to join forces and inspire families to participate in the activity. The project will draw fresh ideas from both sides and increase cooperation between the villages. The project will also bring together other village actors and resources to develop village tourism: the municipality, school, villagers and leisure residents, associations and entrepreneurs. In recent years, we have seen how, by involving villagers and village entrepreneurs, innovative events have been created. We are pleased that the active activities have created well-being and friendships between the villagers. In this project, cooperation with the villagers will continue and we will also be involved in regional tourism development.

For more information about the project, please contact project worker Johanna Koponen, kerkollekylaan@gmail.com p. 0400 376 585.

The project has received EU rural funding through the Development Association Mansikka.

Kerkon Evening Fishing 2024

Kerkon Evening Fishing 2024

Iltapilkki 24

Joy and togetherness in the middle of a long winter

The Kerkonko Evening Fishing Festival was held for the second time last Saturday, March 9th, in Hietaharju, Kerkonkoski. The event is a joyful demonstration of the volunteer spirit of the people of Kerkonkoski.

The number of ice fishermen participating in the competition was the same as last year, 71 people. The largest catch was 2385g. Ice fishermen ranged from under-school age to senior citizens. The ice fishing competition was held in five different categories and the cash prizes were determined based on the number of participants. Children and young people received prizes in goods.

On the ice of Hietaharju there was also other activities for the whole family on a Saturday in March. Those who wanted to try out tandem skiing, raffle tickets were sold and there was fishing for children. The lovely Vipa horse took us on a sleigh to the seine site to watch the winter seine haul. The fishermen's catch of fish from the seine this time was small, but there was plenty to marvel at in the operation!

Kerkonkoski Evening Ice Fishing originated from the coffees, "business food" of Kerkonkoski entrepreneurs, in the fall of 2022. Kerkonkoski's summer is lively, but in winter, there are few meetings in the village, so we started working together on the idea of a winter event.

Village shop Kosken Puotipiika Café Kuha served sausage, pea soup, wall-bottom pancakes and other delicacies to the event attendees on Saturday. There was a pleasant buzz of conversation at the long tables, as villagers and those from further afield met over a hot cup of coffee. The event organizers were most pleased by the happy faces and the chatter.

Event manager Juha Karppinen describes the talk show: "On Friday, when we gathered, I noticed that the volunteers' batteries and mittens were full of volunteer energy. After the start on Saturday morning, the assembly of the competition site went smoothly, the tents were put up, the Baja hut was moved, the benches, chairs, fire pits, lights, signs and instructions were all quickly placed in their places. It was as if everything had been carefully planned in advance."

Karppinen jatkaa: “There were 45 volunteers in total, most of whom worked in ice fishing and some in Cafe Kuha, Wille's seine or Afterpilkki in Seurala. Not forgetting the ice maintenance team and those who were involved in spirit, the number is rising rapidly. From my perspective, all the teams did their part very well, and I heard from many people that they were satisfied with the arrangements and offerings of the event.”

The event day did not end with the ice fishing competitions, but the evening continued at the Village Hall Seurala. At 6:00 PM, a KeKe-RautU ice hockey match was played on the Seurala field. The battle was tight and the game ended in a 4-4 draw. A large crowd had gathered to cheer on their favorite teams.

The 150 tickets for the After Pilk organized by Kerkonkoski Keitaa were sold out, but even before the tickets went on sale, about 100 people had time to visit the Seurala. In total, well over 200 event guests visited the Seurala during the evening. The theme of the After Pilk was a masquerade, and the prize for the best costume was won by a gorgeous steampunk-style couple (picture). The crowd was entertained by the party band Ninety Show, and the evening continued late into the night to the tunes of DJ MIKSEI.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the event! Event guests, ice-fishing competitors, hockey players, volunteers, entrepreneurs and sponsors. Together you are the lifeblood of the event! 🙂

Thank you sponsors!
